(2023). The new wave of influencers: Examining college athlete identities and the role of homophily and parasocial relationships in leveraging name, image, and likeness. Journal of Sport Management, 37(5), 371–388.

This study emphasizes how an athlete can use their influence to bring revenue and attention to an entire university, not just athletics. Through this behavioral study, we can understand that once students feel connected with these athletes through a slight parasocial relationship (most of them), they are most likely to purchase apparel/merchandise from them. This supports the authors hypothesis that college athletes have become the new wave of influencers. Additionally, once these athletes have gained the the trust of the student body and staff, they must maintain that image. I believe this can be useful to my project when discussing the added pressure once becoming a student athlete. They risk consequences of making mistakes in front of the entire university because of their influence.

Two student groups at Southeastern University about why they buy what their fellow student-athletes endorse, how they feel about attending the program, and the reasoning behind their answers.

I have completely submersed myself into my project this week. Once I cleared up the multiple timeline confusion, I became unsure of how closely I will be working with my committee and if ALL of them realize the amount of time I would need from them about my project. I was under the impression that we would be checking in a few times a week,( or when needed be) with the members showing them progress in our project. However, if I can’t a good amount of time with them for the just planning my project, I’m not sure about their time during the production and writing process.

Regardless of my uncertaintly, I know I need to continue to take steps to move forward. I had my meeting with Matt yesterday, and Betsy Tuttleman today. Matt suggested that I involve a psychologist to cover the mental aspect (quarter) of my project and that I only interview one female and male athlete. He stated that the theme of emotion would resonate better with the audience and having too many athletes will lose their attention. He also stated that have a psychologist state his professional opinon and would be more of a reliable source to the watcher.

Betsy suggested an element to my project I didn’t even think about: The academic challenges of a college athlete. I had covered almost every challenge but the most obvious hardship for a STUDENT athlete. However, I don’t want to simply show their academic issues, but I want to introduce that these programs are enrolling athletes into easier classes so they can focus more on their sports. I want to demonstrate the disservice that it creates making it harder it makes the transition to adult life. The next step is just organizing that in my documentary. Yay 🙁

The first linkedin learning video I watched was “How to make a documentary”. Even though, I chose to create this for my final project I have no experience producing this. I thought I was farther along in this process but it seems like I’m only at the introduction portion of the video because I haven’t fully organized my pitch let alone outlined my proposal. This video made me realize you have plan out every almost second of your video. It’s just so much planning that can get overwhelming but I’m trying to have a good attitude about it.

🙂

super long….. so sorry Su, Y., Guo, X., Wegner, C., & Baker, T.
