A Study on Student-Athlete Identity Foreclosure: What Academic and Professional Support Services Are Needed to Assist with a Successful Post-Sport Transition<\/em> by Kevin Charles Mendez (2022) relates and is<\/em> the topic to my project. The reading explains that identity foreclosure occurs when the athlete becomes solely committed to one role that they refuse to explore any other parts of their identity. Not only does Mendez, analyze the identity loss of athletes, but his study focuses on the solutions to prepare players once they have stopped competing. Mendez emphasizes the value of coaches, faculty and even teammates during the transitioning process for these athletes (pg.11). He argues that coaches and an athlete’s support system are the ‘solution’<\/em> to the issues they face while searching for self-identity. Coaches should <\/em>support their players academic and career goals, to ensure post-athlete preparation (pg.13).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the use of student athlete examples from Mendez increased my awareness on the mental health neglect they face, especially when dealing with injuries, pressures, burnout etc. This provided different perspectives and allowed me to form more questions to ask future players when time for the interviews. The reading emphasizes that student-athletes should not wait until their sports career is over to think about their future. They should have opportunities while they are still athletes to explore careers, academics, relationships, and other interests. When initially brainstorming this project, I feared I wouldn’t be able to present any solutions to the issues I’ve introduced beyond the recommendation of financial literacy classes. After reading this study by Mendez, I have a better understanding of the landscape for my future documentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, I only did minimal work towards the project this week. This article helped figure out what my main topic and subgroups are. My intentions are to go into social media as a career so I want the effects the digital community has on athletes to be a pivotal talking point within my project. I also have a (somewhat) clear idea who is going to be in committee and even the chair. Yet, I am still struggling on if I am sticking to the documentary idea because I’m not sure I’ll get that many athletes to answer the question of who they are without their sport or what happens if they don’t play professionally. This issue makes me want to want to switch to a podcast, but I desperately want the visual effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
