‘Beyond the Athlete’<\/em> is (going to be) a documentary that focuses on the exploitation of college athletes. With the creation of the NIL, the rise of identity foreclosure, lack of education on financial literacy and the minimal attention to mental health, young athletes are hardly prepared for life after their sport. My documentary plans to explore who these athletes are and will be once they’ve stopped competing. Additionally, I plan to incorporate on how the rise of social media has created a hyper reality and unnecessary pressure for these young adults. The digital community can be used as a double sided sword that if not navigated carefully, can strip the athlete of their future. There’s other subgroups I want to explore with this but will admit that my thoughts aren’t organized yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebecca Sebring’s Navigating Inequality from the Sidelines: A Documentary About Women in Sports Media<\/em> and Maya Queenan’s Mind Matters Most<\/em> are the two projects from the MA booklet that are close to my project direction. They both discuss what the importance of performance can do to your mental health. However, Rebecca’s documentary focuses on the sexism that women in sports have to experience to just complete thier jobs. Maya’s docu-series emphasizes how deprioritizing mental health can have negative consequences for a college athlete. After viewing this, I plan to actually reach out to both of them asking them a few questions about their filming process. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
