How do you feel your research progress is meeting the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the semester? What research milestone(s) are you especially proud of so far?

I feel that I am making progress, although I have not quite found my footing yet. Much of the project still feels conceptual, and I am working to connect my research to the practical direction of the project. My goal over the next two weeks is to move beyond the concept stage and begin making more tangible progress. One milestone I am especially proud of is that my videographer and I have developed a plan and established a timeline. Having that structure in place has helped me feel more organized and confident about moving forward.

2. How is your project vision/previsualization process meeting the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the semester? What production milestone(s) are you especially proud of so far?

I have become much more intentional about how I want this project to come together. Knowing the location, learning more about the history of media, and beginning to explore some difficult questions have helped me think more critically about the story I want to tell. I am especially proud that I have been recording footage little by little over the past two semesters in preparation for this MA project. Having that material gives me a foundation to work with as I develop the documentary and behind-the-scenes film.

3. How would you articulate how your project development and academic research will produce a final project that addresses the MA Project paper requirements?

I have not yet found research that directly addresses every aspect of what I am creating, but the academic literature from my Media Institutions class has been helpful in shaping my thinking. Understanding the history and structure of media institutions is important because I need to understand how the industry developed to better understand where I want to position myself within it. As I continue researching, I want to make stronger connections between the academic theories, the challenges of independent media production, and the decisions I make throughout this project. My goal is for the final paper to demonstrate not only what I created, but also the research and theoretical framework informing why I created it and how I evaluate its success.

4. What are you most looking forward to in the second half of the semester?

I am looking forward to beginning my project binder, working through my storyboard shot list, and conducting interviews for the documentary. I am excited to see the project move from planning and brainstorming into actual production. I think having these tangible elements come together will help me better understand the direction of the story and identify what still needs to be developed. Honestly, I am also looking forward to feeling like I am halfway done! I know there is still work ahead, but I am excited to see the pieces begin to come together.

1.
