Characteristic is a feature of a something that helps to identify it. In What Do You Do With A Tail Like This, the author introduces the unique characteristics of various animals, including their eyes, tongues, and tails.

Ask your child about the characteristics of an animal in your neighborhood or home. 

A pillar is a tall vertical structure of stone, wood, or metal, used as a support for a building, or as an ornament or monument. This picture shows the pillars on the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Look for an example of a pillars in your neighborhood or build pillars with round blocks at home. 

A cliff  is a vertical, or nearly vertical, rock exposure. Cliffs are common on coasts, in mountainous areas, and along rivers.

Look for a cliff near a hill, creek or river and point it out to your child. 

A spear is a long weapon with a pointed head.

Ask you child how he or she could catch fish with a spear.
