How to Join TUEMS

 TUEMS is looking for new members who are dedicated to helping others and bettering the community. TUEMS members gain knowledge and hands-on experience while delivering care to Temple University’s Main Campus students, staff, and the surrounding North Philadelphia community. All Temple University Students (graduate or undergraduate) of any discipline or major are welcome to join. If you are interested, please follow the forms below. No previous EMS experience is required. 

TUEMS Offers 2 Types of Membership: Clinical and Associate Membership

Clinical Members

  • Must be certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in the state of Pennsylvania
  • Can run shifts with TUEMS
  • Attend weekly drill nights for skill practice and review
  • Must pass annual competencies and BLS protocol exam
  • Must attend general body meetings (GBMs)

Associate Members

  • Do not have to be a certified EMT
  • Excellent opportunity to get involved in the Temple community and learn more about EMS
  • Great stepping stone for those interested in getting their EMT
  • Assist with community events, engagement, and fundraising efforts
  • Can attend any GBMs, training sessions, and events TUEMS has

Not an EMT but Interested in Becoming One?

 Don’t fret! If you are interested in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Temple University offers an EMT class through the College of Public Health. Please contact us if you are interested in this, and we can provide more information! 

Additionally, your local ambulance agency may offer a course, and many community colleges offer EMT courses during the year and over summer break. 


If You Are an EMT:

To gain membership:

       1. Acquire Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification in the state of Pennsylvania (if seeking to become a clinical member).

                    Have an out-of-state certification? See the reciprocity form below or talk to us about obtaining reciprocity. 

       2. Complete the TUEMS Application and email it to tuems@temple.edu or drop it off at the TUEMS headquarters located at 1101 W. Montgomery Ave. (the police station across the street from The View)

       3. Complete online training and necessary material, including immunization records, as specified in the TUEMS Membership Packet. 

       4. Attend an initial interview. 

To become an active member eligible to volunteer as an EMT, you must:

  • Complete new member orientation.
  • Complete the precepting (training) process.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications and immunizations. 

To maintain membership:

  • Maintain a current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification in the State of Pennsylvania and a Healthcare provider CPR certification. 
  • Work with the organization at least 16 hours per month. 
  • Maintain all necessary certifications and immunizations. 
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and training.
