Being a successful student isn’t all about focusing on what is happening now, it is also about making some preparations for your future and creating future opportunities. My academic journey has been a tumultuous one between medical leaves of absence, multiple transfers, and several major changes. These circumstances made it difficult for me to understand what I would want a future career to look like, let alone the academic training that would go along with it. My journey is settling down as I have found the major that best suits my skills (Communication Studies) and I will remain at Temple University for the remainder of my undergraduate education. The feeling of being settled has allowed me to focus on my passions and I found my mind and heart guiding me in the direction of becoming a therapist. I am considering pursuing a Master’s in Social Work to obtain the LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) licensure in order to make my passion to help others a reality. The first realistic step for me was to attend the Social Service Annex’s event “Is Grad School For You?” This event was highly informative and the organizers worked well with attendees to actually answer the proposed question. It covered the cost and financing of graduate education and personal and professional factors to consider. One of the most helpful takeaways was the information regarding obtaining funds for graduate education as it can be costly. I learned that if you are a full-time employee of a university, you can likely get the cost of your graduate education greatly reduced or even free—a course of action I am heavily considering. Attending this event has further affirmed my plans of attending graduate school and I plan to keep working in that direction.
