Part of being successful in any area of life requires nourishing your body with food that will support your activities, something especially important for college students. In my early adult years, I became passionate about healthy eating and nutrition, even to the point of being a Nutritional Sciences major at my last university. Although that is not the professional direction I decided to go in, it is something I am passionate about. This passion led me to attend Social Service Annex’s “Healthy Food Resources for TU Students” event. At the event, the host explained that food insecurity is a bigger issue on college campuses than assumed due to the fact that while students may have access to food, they might not have access to healthy food or food that is relevant to them culturally. This is also due to the fact that healthy foods can be more costly and time-consuming to prepare, which does not necessarily fit into the lives of college students financially or in terms of their busy schedules. The host referred the attendees to food resources on Temple’s campus, Cherry Pantry, and community resources and fridges to get low to no-cost access to healthy foods. They also discussed that many students are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (also known as food stamps) and demonstrated how to access those resources. The event ended with the host showing attendees quick healthy meals that students can make. Overall, I felt that this event was the most important one I attended because it was resource-rich on ways students can get the nutritional support they need. Food is such an integral part of a good mood, health, and overall functioning and I have integrated the information learned from the event into my own life and diet.
