Week 14: Next Steps

Media Industry and Next Steps

Throughout the semester, producers work very hard on the details of production from script revisions and location scouting (preproduction) to camera settings and actor performance (production) to color balance and sound design (postproduction). At the end of our semester-long journey, where will projects go? In this blog, author Cristina Pomales reflects on the future life of her film in conversation with the article Hollywood studio filmmaking in the age of Netflix: a tale of two institutional logics.

Media Industry by Streaming

As a producer of Crestwood, I had the chance to do camera, a little bit of directing, and audio. Also, I created the trailer and edited scenes, but what I will talk abou there is distribution. Hadida, Lampel, Walls and Joshi (2020) describe the importance of distribution and compare two leading distrubtion strategies: Hollywood (theatrical release) and Netflix (online streaming).

One thing that every producer needs to consider is audience and how to reach them. Where will you share your project? For example, if you want to attract a lot of attention, then cinema is for you. If you want to share your video globally and simultaneously, then streaming is the right choice (Hadida, et. al., 2020). As for me, the project I produced is a mockumentary which is made for all ages and especially women. My advice is that if I had to share and promote it, then I would choose a streaming model like Netflix. It has more access at anytime and anywhere you go, you can have access from any electronic device, and you only have to pay a subscription monthly instead of paying a lot of money on going to a cinema. Also, my project is not ideal to have on a big screen because it is designed to be something that people would rather see in the comfort of their home.

My advice is that every producer needs to know beforehand where they want to share the final product because there are things that can be created for cinemas, but also for streaming. It is important to know the pros and cons of both sides and then determine which one is ideal for you. In a way, our class did both, because we had a final screening event (similar to a theatrical release) and now our work will be streaming online and will be submitted to Temple University Television (TUTV).
