

{"id":21,"date":"2007-02-24T14:38:57","date_gmt":"2007-02-24T14:38:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dbl.lishost.org\/blog\/2007\/02\/24\/jeff-trzeciak-my-first-post\/"},"modified":"2007-02-24T14:38:57","modified_gmt":"2007-02-24T14:38:57","slug":"jeff-trzeciak-my-first-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/stevenb\/2007\/02\/24\/jeff-trzeciak-my-first-post\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeff Trzeciak &#8211; My first post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am a little behind my fellow contributors to this blog so this is simply an introduction to me and what I&#8217;ll be blogging about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About me<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am currently the University Librarian at <a href=\"http:\/\/mcmaster.ca\">McMaster University<\/a> in Hamilton, Ontario. \u00c2\u00a0 While I am in academia now I started my career (more than 20 years ago) in a public library and have worked over the years with special libraries, archives and museums.\u00c2\u00a0 For eight years I worked at Wayne State University in Detroit where they have an ALA-accredited MLS program.\u00c2\u00a0 My experience there gave me a glimpse into the changing nature of librarian education.<\/p>\n<p>I have only been at McMaster since July but we have already made some significant changes.\u00c2\u00a0 We are going through a transformation process, which you can read about on <a href=\"http:\/\/ulatmac.wordpress.com\">my blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About my contributions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am particularly interested in the application of new technologies within libraries.\u00c2\u00a0 Gaming (MMORPGs) and virtual worlds (Second Life) are of special interest to me.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of you may have seen my post <a href=\"http:\/\/ulatmac.wordpress.com\/2006\/09\/18\/8\/\">&#8220;I want a gaming librarian&#8221;<\/a> and may be interested in knowing that we are, in fact, hiring a gaming librarian.\u00c2\u00a0 This position will provide leadership in the development and implementation of innovative, highly engaging, habitable environments for teaching and learning.\u00c2\u00a0 Our forray into Second Life, where we now offer reference services, has been well received by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamiltonspectator.com\/NASApp\/cs\/ContentServer?pagename=hamilton\/Layout\/Article_Type1&amp;c=Article&amp;cid=1170888612093&amp;call_pageid=1112188062650&amp;col=1112188062882%22\">Hamilton community<\/a>. How can these emerging and highly popular technologies be incorporated into libraries so that we can reach our users wherever they are?<br \/>\nI am also interested in new models for the organization.\u00c2\u00a0 I know there is some resistance to the &#8220;2.0&#8221; moniker but I&#8217;m going to use it anyway!\u00c2\u00a0 What is &#8220;leadership 2.0&#8221; or as one of my librarians recently asked what is &#8220;administration 2.0&#8221;?\u00c2\u00a0 Given the radical redefinition of library resources, services and facilities, how do we radically redefine our organizations as well?\u00c2\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00c2\u00a0 What will they look like?\u00c2\u00a0 More importantly, how do we redefine our organizations given the constraints of our parent organizations?\u00c2\u00a0 (universities, school districts, corporations, government agencies, boards, etc)<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I will also, out of necessity, blog about changing space.\u00c2\u00a0 Our Science Engineering Library, a building straight out of the 70&#8217;s &#8211; left virtually unchanged since its construction &#8211; is on the university&#8217;s capital campaign for a $4 million dollar face lift.\u00c2\u00a0 What kind of space should it become?\u00c2\u00a0 How do we appeal to this generation of student?\u00c2\u00a0 What should it include?\u00c2\u00a0 What should be removed?\u00c2\u00a0 In particula, how do we strike a balance of &#8220;collections&#8221; (which are used less and less often) with &#8220;technology&#8221; and &#8220;collaboration space&#8221;?\u00c2\u00a0 This will be a major challenge for us over the next couple of years.<\/p>\n<p>So, I will have a wide variety of topics to blog.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m looking forward to it &#8211; watch this space &#8211; it should be fun!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am a little behind my fellow contributors to this blog so this is simply an introduction to me and what I&#8217;ll be blogging about.
