A central goal of the SPAC Lab is to bridge this gap by developing experimentally controlled paradigms that progressively increase ecological validity while preserving the ability to identify the perceptual, cognitive, and behavioral mechanisms underlying successful communication.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1963\" data-end=\"2215\">Rather than viewing communication as a single speech recognition event, we study communication as a dynamic process that unfolds over time through interactions among acoustic environments, language, visual information, cognition, and listener behavior.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2217\" data-end=\"2220\" \/>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1alf6wk\" data-start=\"2222\" data-end=\"2249\">Current Research Themes<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2251\" data-end=\"2308\">Our current research focuses on four complementary areas:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2365\"><strong data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2365\">Speech perception in complex listening environments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2519\">We investigate how acoustic, perceptual, and cognitive factors jointly support speech understanding in noise and other challenging listening conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2573\"><strong data-start=\"2521\" data-end=\"2573\">Discourse comprehension during continuous speech<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2575\" data-end=\"2773\">We study how listeners integrate acoustic, semantic, and contextual information while understanding connected speech, using behavioral measures, pupillometry, and computational time-series analyses.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2775\" data-end=\"2826\"><strong data-start=\"2775\" data-end=\"2826\">Face-to-face communication and visual attention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2828\" data-end=\"3101\">Using AI-generated conversational agents, eye tracking, and pupillometry, we examine how listeners coordinate auditory and visual information during realistic face-to-face communication and how individual differences in gaze behavior contribute to successful communication.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3129\"><strong data-start=\"3103\" data-end=\"3129\">Adaptive communication<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3131\" data-end=\"3356\">Our long-term research seeks to develop mechanistic models of adaptive communication by integrating multimodal behavioral and physiological measures to understand how communication evolves over time in realistic environments.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3701\" data-end=\"3704\" \/>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"17d9phn\" data-start=\"3706\" data-end=\"3726\">Long-Term Vision<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3728\" data-end=\"4193\">The SPAC Lab seeks to develop mechanistic models of human communication that improve the everyday communication experiences of older adults with hearing loss. By integrating experimentally controlled research with increasingly realistic communication paradigms, our long-term goal is to provide the scientific foundation for next-generation hearing technologies and personalized communication interventions that adapt to users&#8217; moment-to-moment communication needs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b973b6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7b973b6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt\"><b>Opportunities for Older Individuals\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;font-size: 14pt\">We are interested in working with older individuals with and without hearing loss who would like to participate in research.
