Shipley’s research focuses on spatial cognition and learning. He applies formal methods to understand the perceptual and cognitive processes subserving navigation and visualization. His recent work aims to support learning in the geosciences. One thread focuses on undergraduate geoscience education with the goal of understanding the cognitive processes that support spatial understanding required to reason about 3D structures and the processes that formed them. The second thread aims to support expert workflows. Working closely with geoscientists and computer scientists to understand the cognitive processes behind data collection decisions, how these decisions interact with data and model uncertainty, and how the structure of the world influence expert attention and inferences.

CVDownload

317 Weiss HallTelephone: 215-204-7890tshipley@temple.edu Thomas F.
