Open Education Week is an annual celebration designed to raise awareness about open educational resources and practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/open-educational-resources?hub=785\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/open-educational-resources?hub=785\">Open educational resources (OER)<\/a><\/strong> are teaching and learning materials that are free of cost and access barriers, and which have permissions for reuse.\u00a0Examples of OER include videos, images, lab activities, homework assignments, and textbooks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open educational practices \u2014 also known as open pedagogy \u2014 use OER to support student learning by inviting them to become active participants in the teaching and learning environment, engaging in knowledge&nbsp;creation&nbsp;and sharing.&nbsp;One method of engaging in open pedagogy is the development of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/guides.temple.edu\/oer\/teach#s-lg-box-33441376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>renewable assignments<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty who\u00a0use\u00a0OER instead of a commercial textbook can\u00a0help reduce student financial barriers.\u00a0Also, faculty who\u00a0use\u00a0OER can customize the\u00a0content\u00a0to meet the needs of their class, allowing for localized\u00a0and\u00a0culturally responsive materials.\u00a0Overall, this can help ensure immediate access to course materials as well as foster student belonging and agency.\u00a0Check out our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guides.temple.edu\/oer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Open Educational Practices<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0guide to learn more.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Open Education Week Events&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mark Open Education Week, Temple University Libraries will be offering the following activities:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Student Event<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stop by the Textbook Affordability table on the first floor of Charles Library on February 23 and 24\u00a0between 11 AM and 12:30 PM to share your story about how textbook costs impact you, learn more about how to advocate for zero-cost course materials, and craft a \u2018Thank you!\u2019\u00a0to\u00a0your professors who have used affordable textbooks.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Faculty Panel<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cutting Costs, Not Content: A Faculty Conversation on Textbook Affordability\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<br>Thursday,\u00a0February\u00a026 | 1 PM |\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/events\/2263\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Register<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><br>Join us for a faculty panel on textbook affordability during Temple Libraries\u2019 celebration of Open Education Week, featuring instructors who have successfully reduced or eliminated\u00a0textbook costs in their courses with the help of the Libraries&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/categories\/textbook-affordability-project\"><strong>Textbook Affordability Project<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0which awards grant stipends\u00a0ranging from $500 to $1,500 to\u00a0Temple faculty who redesign a course from using commercial textbooks to open educational resources (OER) or materials available through Temple Libraries and then teach that course. Faculty who\u00a0engage\u00a0in open educational practices, like\u00a0replacing a disposable assignment with a renewable assignment,\u00a0are\u00a0also eligible.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/services\/history-past-awardees\"><strong>Over 100 Temple faculty<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0have been awarded grants since 2011.\u00a0The call for applications will open on February 23, 2026 and close on April 3, 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope you will join us for our Open Education Week&nbsp;events!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Temple University Libraries is celebrating&nbsp;Open Education Week&nbsp;from February 23 to February 27, 2026.
