We harness geospatial intelligence and sensing technologies and embrace extreme inter- and trans-disciplinarity to achieve this goal.<\/p>\n<div style=\"background-color: #d8e3e6;text-align: center;padding: 30px;padding-bottom: 5px\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h3>RECENT NEWS<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>December 2025: <\/strong>Lab members Victor Gutierrez, Victoria Sarmiento, Angela Mej\u00eda, and Sara Grisales, presented their work in the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in New Orleans.<\/li>\n<li><strong>November 2025:<\/strong> Victor Gutierrez coauthored a published paper in the journal Regional Environmental Change demonstrating how promoting resident land ownership and permanent canopy crops can reduce invasive weed proliferation in the Peruvian Amazon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 2025:<\/strong> Lab member, Angela Mej\u00eda successfully lead a workshop with the remote sensing and spatial analysis team working at the National Park System of Colombia. The workshop provided skills for downloading time-series satellite data, producing temporal composites, classify land covers and produce time series vegetation anomaly data<\/li>\n<li><strong>August 2025:<\/strong> Former lab member, Jeronimo Rodriguez earned his PhD degree in Geography. Congratulations Dr. Rodriguez!<\/li>\n<li><strong>May 2025:<\/strong> Lab member, Jeronimo Rodriguez successfully defended his dissertation proposal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>May 2025:<\/strong> Former lab member, Dr. Matthew Marcus along with Dr. Victor Gutierrez-Velez published a <a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/2976-601X\/adcf2a\/meta\">paper<\/a> in the journal Environmental Research Food Systems that identifies key economic, institutional, and cultural elements associated to sustainable and unsustainable palm swamp fruit extraction practices in lowland Peruvian Amazon. The publication contributes to advance the understanding of the sustainabilty of social-ecological systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>November 2024: <\/strong>Dr. Guti\u00e9rrez-V\u00e9lez along with Jeronimo Rodriguez and Angela Mej\u00eda published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15481603.2024.2427305#abstract\">paper<\/a> in the journal GIScience and Remote Sensing that demonstrates the need to advance forest change monitoring capabilities towards the mapping of forest cover and change as continuous rather than discrete variables.<\/li>\n<li><strong>November 2024:<\/strong> Dr. Guti\u00e9rrez-V\u00e9lez organized a workshop in Bogot\u00e1, hosted by the von Humboldt Institute for Biological Resources, to evaluate the impact of NASA investments to support biodiversity decision making in Colombia.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0px 0px 0px 0px\"><b>October 2024:<\/b> Dr. Guti\u00e9rrez-V\u00e9lez participated as coauthor in a <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10113-024-02302-8\">publication<\/a> in the journal Regional Environmental Change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>June 2024:<\/strong> Dr. Gutierrez-Velez presented at a Biodiversity Workshop organized by the Canadian Space Agency on the contribution of Earth Observations to building capacity for biodiversity monitoring and decision-making in Colombia<\/li>\n<li><strong>May 2024:<\/strong> Congratulations to Victoria Sarmiento and Angela Mej\u00eda for their successful proposal dissertation defense and becoming PhD candidates.<\/li>\n<li><b>February 2024:<\/b> Congratulations to Matt Marcus on earning his PhD and for his graduation!<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 10px 0px 0px 0px\"><b>February 2024:<\/b> Congratulations to Matt Marcus for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0301479723024532\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0301479723024532\">recent publication<\/a> in the Journal of Environmental Management<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 10px 0px 0px 0px\"><b>December 2023:<\/b> Dr. Guti\u00e9rrez-V\u00e9lez and Matt Marcus participated In AGU 2023<\/li>\n<li><strong>November 2023<\/strong><b>: <\/b>Dr. Gutierrez-Velez received support from NASA to evaluate the impact of NASA&#8217;s investments to inform biodiversity decision-making in Colombia.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 10px 0px 0px 0px\"><b>October 2023:<\/b> Dr. Guti\u00e9rrez-V\u00e9lez recent participation as presenter and panel participant in <a href=\"https:\/\/event.fourwaves.com\/geobon-2023\/pages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GEOBON global conference<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We investigate changes in the biosphere as mediated by climate and people\u2019s use of the land with the aim of identifying avenues to align nature conservation and people\u2019s well-being.
