The SAFE Program is for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and\/or intellectual and developmental disabilities (I\/DD). The program targets behaviors to increase safety and prevention of airborne diseases such as COVID-19 in the workplace.  The SAFE program<\/strong> will provide training in an easily understood format for those with ASD and\/or IDD.  The program focuses on teaching specific behaviors to  reduce the risk of acquiring and transmitting. infectious airborne diseases like COVID-19 and the flu.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of a Field Initiated Project (FIP) funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), our research team expanded on the Chance to Ride<\/em>,<\/strong> a travel training curriculum for transitional aged youth with intellectual and\/or developmental disabilities (IDD) developed by the Kennedy Collective. The new curriculum includes a peer support component and consists of 6 lessons and provides powerpoint slideshows for the trainer as well as the trainee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is always important to include people with Intellectual and\/or Developmental Disabilities (IDD) on research teams, especially when the research is to learn about or gather information to help and support people with IDD. When people with IDD are included in the research process, it helps make sure that the research is important and meaningful to people with IDD, as well as their family members, caregivers and service providers. One way to help include people with IDD in research is by using Peer Support. Peer support happens when a person with lived experience provides support and help to someone else with that same lived experience. For this toolkit, lived experience<\/a> refers to people with an Intellectual and\/or Developmental Disability (IDD) who work on research teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
