Differences in the material properties of bacterial biofilms, such as rigidity and molecule penetration, have been observed in biofilms of different bacterial species, within the same species under different growth conditions and after treatment with matrix modifying molecules. To better quantitate the material properties of biofilms, an experimental and computational workflow was developed, BiofilmEvaluator.


What is Biofilm Evaluator?

BiofilmEvaluator allows users to analyze 3D micro-bead trajectories, providing insight into the material properties of heterogeneous biofilms.

  1. Biofilm Bead Assay – Grow biofilms and add micro-beads.
  2. Image Processing – Use ImageJ and the Mosaic plugin to generate 3D bead trajectories.
  3. Trajectory Analysis – Use the BiofilmEvaluator to generate valuable trajectory data, such as bead velocities, bounding box volumes, average cell densities, and much more.

Install VRL-Studio, then the BiofilmEvaluator plugin.
