Ronit currently lives in Germany pursuing his passion, journalism. Thinking back to his childhood, he remembers the moments that made him internalize his complexion as a prominent part of himself, \u201cIn the beginning, there was this subconscious pressure to \u201credeem\u201d my skin color because\u00ad\u2013\u2013it was widely accepted in society\u00ad\u00ad\u2013\u2013fairer is more beautiful and I did try when I was given all those products and [had to listen to] those comments.\u201d He talks about being shipped off to a boarding school at 12 and how that was the start of the constant barrage of comments from his relatives and actions that spoke louder than words\u2013\u2013like being told to stay out of the sun, to use certain soaps and creams, and being gifted hats so his skin doesn\u2019t become \u201cdark\u201d even if he has to be out in the sun. He also talks about the times being different, especially in a cutthroat environment like a boarding school, \u201cThere were these synonyms of \u201cblack\u201d that became a regular part our language, so much so that it became some people\u2019s nickname.\u201d While he\u2019s ashamed of how he and his peers behaved back then, he is also proud of his growth and his new-found ability to call people out.
