Freaney, Jr., Professor of <a title=\"Political Science\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cla.temple.edu\/politicalscience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Political Science<\/a> and <a title=\"Law School\" href=\"http:\/\/www.law.temple.edu\/Pages\/homepage.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Law<\/a> and <a title=\"JM Chair\" href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/education\/jean-monnet\/personam_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Monnet Chair<\/a> at Temple University, where I teach and do research on international institutions, international law, and the politics of the European Union, among other subjects. \u00a0I served as the founding Director (2015-2020) of the interdisciplinary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cla.temple.edu\/globalstudies\/\">Global Studies Program<\/a> and major at Temple, and I now (2022-2025) serve as Chair of the Department of Political Science.<\/p>\n<p>Much of my work focuses on the institutions and politics of the European Union, including my first book,\u00a0<a title=\"Engines\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Engines-European-Integration-Delegation\/dp\/0199251177\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1372648857&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=Pollack+engines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Engines of European Integration<\/em><\/a> (Oxford University Press, 2003), and the more recent\u00a0<a title=\"PMEU\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Policy-Making-European-Union-New\/dp\/0199544824\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1372648899&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Policy-Making in the European Union<\/em><\/a> (co-edited with Helen Wallace and Alasdair Young, Oxford University Press, 2010),\u00a0and I&#8217;ve recently written about the <a title=\"New EU Legal History\" href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2207170\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">history of the European Court of Justice<\/a>, and <a title=\"Material World\" href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1623002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the EU&#8217;s putative role as a &#8220;Normative Power.&#8221; <\/a>\u00a0I have also researched and written extensively \u00a0about the EU&#8217;s close yet ambivalent relationship with the United States, including in\u00a0<em><a title=\"When Cooperation Fails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/When-Cooperation-Fails-International-Genetically\/dp\/0199567050\/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1372649091&amp;sr=1-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">When Cooperation Fails: The International Law and Politics of Genetically Modified Foods<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(co-authored with Greg Shaffer, Oxford University Press, 2009), and several edited volumes.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, my work has focused increasingly on the politics of international law. \u00a0I recently co-edited, with Jeffrey Dunoff, a comprehensive volume on the subject,\u00a0<em><a title=\"Dunoff and Pollack\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Interdisciplinary-Perspectives-International-Law-Relations\/dp\/1107684021\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1372649198&amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Interdisciplinary Perspectives on International Law and International Relations: \u00a0The State of the Art<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(Cambridge University Press, 2013), as well as writing several articles (with Gregory Shaffer) on <a title=\"Hard and Soft Law\" href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1426123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the interaction of hard and soft law<\/a>, and <a title=\"International Security\" href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1786836\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">soft law in international security<\/a>. \u00a0I am currently working on several related projects, including a comparative study of international judicial practices (with Dunoff), the lessons of international law for international relations scholars (also with Dunoff), and\u00a0an ongoing project on <a href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2636844\">the United States&#8217; ambivalent relationship to international law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before coming to Temple, I was an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Visiting Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the <a title=\"EUI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eui.eu\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">European University Institute<\/a>, in Florence, Italy. \u00a0In 2009, I was named by the European Union as a <a title=\"JM Chair\" href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/education\/jean-monnet\/personam_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jean Monnet Chair <em>ad personam<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My name is Mark Pollack, and I&#8217;m the Thomas J.
