Althschuler solidified this link statistically; therefore we now know for sure that Weelkes 1597 book of madrigals nos. 13 through 18, correspond to madrigals of Salamone Rossi set in 1589, no.s 7, 6, 2, 11, 15, and 19 both texts and musically, and that Weelkes had to\u00a0have been familiar with the Rossi set. \u00a0On Wednesday, October 12th, at noon in Temple University&#8217;s Paley Library, A<em> Concert<\/em> 4<em>20 Years in the Making <\/em>will bring together these corresponding madrigals in a performance for the first time.\u00a0To add to the historic importance of this event, none of the Weelkes&#8217; madrigals on this program have\u00a0previously been recorded.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5317\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5317\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5317 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/tapestry-1024x688.jpg\" alt=\"picture of 17th century English musicians\" width=\"540\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/tapestry.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/tapestry-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/tapestry-768x516.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5317\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mid 17th Century English tapestry. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Madrigals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Madrigals, beautifully expressive secular vocal pieces originated in Italy and increased in\u00a0popularity through the 16th and 17th centuries. Composed for 3 or more voices, each voice had its\u00a0own unique florid melody that when sung all together combine to create beautiful music. (Music with\u00a0several melodies \u00a0occurring at the same time is called <a href=\"http:\/\/libproxy.temple.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/www.oxfordmusiconline.com\/subscriber\/article\/opr\/t114\/e5271?q=polyphony&amp;pos=2&amp;_start=1#firsthit\">polyphony<\/a>.) The expressive and complex melodies found in madrigals\u00a0necessitate a\u00a0considerable amount of skill and artistry to compose and to perform. The popular Italian madrigal spread north, and flourished particularly\u00a0in England after the 1588 publication of <a href=\"http:\/\/libproxy.temple.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/gateway.proquest.com\/openurl?ctx_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;xri:pqil:res_ver=0.2&amp;res_id=xri:lion&amp;rft_id=xri:lion:ft:po:Z000493425:&amp;rft.accountid=14270\"><em>Musica Transalpina<\/em><\/a>, a collection of Italian madrigals translated into English. So popular was the madrigal, and so many madrigals were composed by English composers that an &#8220;English Madrigal School&#8221; developed with its own unique musical characteristics. At the end of the 16th century, the English Madrigal School\u00a0reached its height with Thomas Morley, John Wilbye, and Thomas Weelkes considered to be the best\u00a0English madrigalists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Weelkes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thomas Weelkes (1570-1623), arguably the finest English madrigalist, wrote sacred \u00a0and instrumental music in addition to madrigals. \u00a0His served\u00a0as\u00a0organist at Winchester College and as organist and <em>informator choristarum<\/em> at the Chichester Cathedral. \u00a0He presumably suffered from alcoholism\u00a0and records indicate that he was noted for neglecting his duties and behaving in a disruptive unseemly manner during worship services. \u00a0In spite of all this,\u00a0Weelkes was a prolific composer. \u00a0In his\u00a0first publication (1587) of \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/libproxy.temple.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/gateway.proquest.com\/openurl?ctx_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;res_id=xri:eebo&amp;rft_id=xri:eebo:image:3446\">Cantus prim[us]. Madrigals to 3.4.5. &amp; 6. voyces<\/a>,\u00a0numbers 13 through 18, all for 5 voices, correspond to canzonettes published in 1589\u00a0by Italian composer Salamone Rossi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5323\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5323\" style=\"width: 212px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5323 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/rossiprimolibro-212x300.png\" alt=\"title page of Rossi's 1589 set of madrigals.\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/rossiprimolibro-212x300.png 212w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/rossiprimolibro-768x1086.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/rossiprimolibro-724x1024.png 724w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/files\/2016\/09\/rossiprimolibro.png 1131w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rossi Primo Libro delle Canzonette, Venice, 1589.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salamone Rossi \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Salamone Rossi (1570? &#8211; 1630), \u00a0a contemporary and colleague of <a href=\"http:\/\/libproxy.temple.edu\/login?url=http:\/\/www.oxfordmusiconline.com\/subscriber\/article\/grove\/music\/44352pg2#S44352.2\">Claudio Monteverdi<\/a>, served as violist at the court of Vincenzo Gonzaga in Mantua.\u00a0Duke Vincenzo thought so highly of Rossi that a royal decree was issued absolving Rossi from having to wear the yellow patch required of all Jews in Mantua at that time. \u00a0 Rossi is most known for writing\u00a0Jewish liturgical music, particularly the\u00a0<em>Hashirim asher lish\u2019lomo<\/em> (\u2018The Songs of Solomon\u2019), a collection of 33 polyphonic settings of Hebrew psalms, hymns and songs. \u00a0In addition, Rossi was an important composer of instrumental music, and morphed the instrumental canzona into what we now call the trio sonata. He was known for using\u00a0vocal compositional techniques for\u00a0instrumental music. His recent regional, national and international conference papers have also addressed the intersection of musical and dramatic or choreographic structure in works by Bach, Mozart, and Weill.
