

{"id":3417,"date":"2011-11-29T17:22:21","date_gmt":"2011-11-29T17:22:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/libtest\/2011\/11\/29\/the_black_composer_in_classica\/"},"modified":"2013-11-21T10:35:54","modified_gmt":"2013-11-21T14:35:54","slug":"the_black_composer_in_classica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/performingartsnews\/2011\/11\/29\/the_black_composer_in_classica\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium: The Black Composer in Classical Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a title=\"link to Amore Anonime by Chevalier St. Georges\" href=\"http:\/\/imslp.org\/wiki\/L%27Amant_anonime_(Saint-Georges,_Joseph_Bologne)\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sample of music score for Amant Anonime, (with link to larger version).\" src=\"http:\/\/lgimages.s3.amazonaws.com\/data\/imagemanager\/286\/chevalier.png\" width=\"600px\" height=\"100px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/imslp.org\/wiki\/L%27Amant_anonime_(Saint-Georges,_Joseph_Bologne)\"><i>L&#8217;Amant Anonime<\/i> by Chevalier Joseph Bologne de Saint-Georges<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 On Sunday afternoon, October 30<sup>th<\/sup>, a panel of distinguished musicians and others gathered for the symposium \u201cThe Black Composer in Classical Music: Talent to be Known\u201d to discuss classical composers of African origin.\u00a0 Organized by Richard Greene, educator and researcher at Temple University, with lead sponsorship by Steven Landstreet, head of the music department of the Free Library of Philadelphia, and Nathaniel Norment, Ph.D., chair of African American studies at Temple University, the symposium\u2019s purpose was to raise awareness, inspire musicians and audiences, and to spark interest in a repertoire historically neglected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Although representing significant contributions to classical music, music of black composers is rarely represented on the classical concert stage.\u00a0 The people gathered at the symposium hope to remedy this situation and to bring this significant, meaningful, and beautiful repertoire to life.\u00a0 The highlight of the program was to honor distinguished composer and author George T.
