169: City Scene War Rug

Provenance Unknown, 2000s

The scene depicted here demonstrates the paradox experienced by modern urban Afghans.  The overwhelming size of the skyscrapers in the visual field creates an almost claustrophobic experience for the viewer and highlights the contrast between the ultra-modern buildings and the unpaved, dirt road upon which the tanks travel. In addition, the distinction between the heavily armed dirt road and the enclosed cityscape provides what could almost be considered a visual metaphor for the conflicting experiences of the rural versus urban Afghan populations.
