This section covers the subject of validation therapy, or reality orientation. Oftentimes, those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease have issues with accurately remembering their current lifestyle. This can be very confusing and discouraging to those who have the disease and family members. Reality orientation and validation therapy focus on orienting a person to person, place, time, weather etc to help them understand their surroundings. Depending on the situation, validation therapy will be implemented. In this case, instead of correcting a person’s wrong information, a therapist will instead ask them further questions regarding their request or desire. This way it does not distress the person any more than necessary and usually the conversation can be brought back to reality.
