The first selection is from John Robert Gast and Jennifer P. Matthews&#8217; <em>Sugarcane and Rum: The Bittersweet History of Labor and Life on the Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula<\/em> (2020). This chapter from Gast and Matthews&#8217; book considers the differences between the drinking cultures in Canc\u00fan and M\u00e9rida. It&#8217;s a wonderful piece on the sociology of alcohol, and it&#8217;s super-short. Definitely read it!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-816cd0c0-4fee-47b0-a23d-71187f31d0b7\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mxpassport\/files\/2024\/06\/Sugarcane-and-Rum-selection.pdf\">Sugarcane-and-Rum-selection<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mxpassport\/files\/2024\/06\/Sugarcane-and-Rum-selection.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-816cd0c0-4fee-47b0-a23d-71187f31d0b7\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll also read the introduction to American Studies scholar M. Bianet Castellano&#8217;s <em>A Return to Servitude: Maya Migration and the Tourist Trade in Canc\u00fan<\/em> (2010). How did reading these texts alter your own relationship to any partying you may or may not have done while on this trip?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How is Castellanos&#8217;s description of Maya labor in <em>A Return to Servitude<\/em> different from the cooperative capitalist enterprise that you saw in Yaxunah?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the difference between a cantina, bar, and club, in your experience? According to&nbsp;<em>Sugarcane and Rum<\/em>?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What have you observed of the labor culture in M\u00e9rida? Think about: the price of Ubers, the price of drinks, the conditions under which cantina\/club employees work, etc. Have you had conversations with anyone about living costs in the city, or<a href=\"https:\/\/theyucatanpost.com\/2023\/06\/28\/how-much-do-you-earn-in-merida-these-are-the-average-salaries\/\"> average wages<\/a>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our course is called &#8220;From Colonialism to Tourism.&#8221; Where do you see elements of the colonial experience in the tourist experience?
