These photographs of this hotel, caught my eye because unlike many other picture in the archive these photos looked like they were going to be used for advertisements. Which differs from most pictures in the archive whose purpose seems to be memorialization. This photo was taken by Pedro Guerra in front of El Gran Hotel. To fully capture this angle on the hotel he took this from Manuel Cepeda Peraza park. Typically when people take pictures especially in such a historical town it is to capture the memory for both themselves and following generations. While this photo was likely taken for people outside of Merida, to encourage them to come visit. Yes, the architecture is beautiful, but I cannot help but think, that this photo caters more towards tourists than Mexican people. With our many discussions on tourism and ownership through photography this is poses an interesting question of who truly owns this picture. If it was a promotional photo taken to entice tourists, then wouldn’t the photo technically be owned by the tourists themselves.
