Matthew J. Smetona is Associate Professor of Instruction in the Intellectual Heritage Program at Temple University. His research interests center on critical theory; the history of political thought; and the history of the novel, especially the nineteenth-century European realist novel.

His most recent book, Recovering the Later Georg Luk\u00e1cs: A Study on the Unity of His Thought<\/em><\/a>, was published in 2023 by the MIT Press. A pr\u00e9cis of the book will be published in the Jahrbuch der Internationalen Georg-Luk\u00e1cs-Gesellschaft<\/em>. The book has been reviewed in Rethinking Marxism<\/em> and Socialist History<\/em>.

His first book, Hegel\u2019s Logical Comprehension of the Modern State<\/em>, was published in 2013 by Lexington Books and reviewed in Perspectives on Politics<\/em>. He is the author of peer-reviewed articles published in Interdisciplinary Literary Studies<\/em>, Rethinking Marxism<\/em>, Angelaki<\/em>, Theoria<\/em>, Telos<\/em>, and Epoch\u00e9<\/em>; book chapters published in Georg Luk\u00e1cs and the Possibilities of Critical Social Ontology<\/em> (Brill, 2019) and Hegel\u2019s Metaphysics and the Philosophy of Politics<\/em> (Routledge, 2018); a translation of an essay authored by Luk\u00e1cs from the German with an introduction published in Angelaki<\/em>; and a book review published in The Philosophical Quarterly<\/em>.

He serves on the editorial board of Angelaki: Journal of the Theoretical Humanities<\/em> as a contributing editor, and he has served as a manuscript referee for the University of Michigan Press, Routledge, Historical Materialism<\/em>, Rethinking Marxism<\/em>, The Review of Metaphysics<\/em>, Theory & Event<\/em>, European Journal of Political Theory<\/em>, Constellations<\/em>, Journal of Social Philosophy<\/em>, Moral Philosophy and Politics<\/em>, and Political Research Quarterly<\/em>. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Temple University.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
