Japan has a unique visual culture, and vending machines are one of the most recognizable parts of everyday life here. They are everywhere—on quiet streets, in busy neighborhoods, and glowing late at night. I wanted to capture that nostalgic atmosphere and combine it with a fashion-focused perspective.

During the shoot, I experimented with camera angles I had never used before. Instead of traditional portrait framing, I focused on unusual perspectives, getting close to the vending machine and using the surrounding environment as part of the composition. This helped create images that felt more immersive and dynamic.

The colors also played a big role. I leaned into tones that reminded me of retro magazine covers from the 1980s, where bold lighting and vibrant color grading created a dreamy, almost cinematic feeling.

Music Influence

Music also played an important role in shaping the mood of this shoot. The vibe of the project was inspired by a childhood song I enjoyed called “Tasogare no Bay City.” The nostalgic feeling of the song helped guide the overall tone of the images.

While editing the photos, I imagined the visuals as if they were part of a music video or magazine spread from that era. The combination of retro sound, Japanese city elements, and fashion styling helped bring the concept together.

Welcome to my personal photo-look-book.
