MA Thesis Blog Post 1

For my Master’s Thesis, I plan to undertake a Creative Project consisting of a 60-90-page script for the pilot episode of Shangri-La, a science fiction story set in 2070s Philadelphia. I have been workshopping since my senior year of high school, and while I have considered adapting it into a variety of mediums, including a graphic novel or a limited saga of films, I presently believe that it would be best written as a series designed for television or streaming. I will also be workshopping the script in my Directed Reading course with Dr. Christine Weatherston, and I am excited to be receiving such a high volume of feedback in both her course and this one. The chance to sharpen my ideas based on the diverse perspectives and input of my professors and peers is one that I am grateful for.

Because I at one time considered making Shangri-La into a web comic or graphic novel, I was naturally drawn to William Davis’ MA Project, a comic called Dichotomy. It follows the life, or rather lives, of two different versions of the same protagonist who live in alternate realities. From the very first page, I was compelled by the art style. It gives a nice middle ground between the styles of Japanese manga and American comic books, both of which I adore. The concept is interesting, and the struggle of the main character is immediately relatable. The trope of a superhero being torn between their personal and heroic lives has been thoroughly explored, but the idea that they literally exist in separate realities is very refreshing. I am also excited to read any piece of media set in Philadelphia, as I feel that it is harshly underrepresented in fictional stories and media.
