

{"id":139,"date":"2015-03-24T11:31:25","date_gmt":"2015-03-24T15:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/?page_id=139"},"modified":"2024-06-12T10:56:54","modified_gmt":"2024-06-12T14:56:54","slug":"community-engagement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/community-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"Community Engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Community Development Workshop : service-learning course projects<\/h3>\n<p>Since 2019 students in the Community Development Workshop have been developing resources for community partners to engage and build capacity to guide development in the neighborhood as gentrification pressures mount.\u00a0 Below are brief descriptions of the course projects with links project pages on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcdssgeo.com\/community-development-workshop\">course website<\/a><\/strong> where student work is displayed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>2022 Eastern North Stories<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In spring 2022, the Community Development Workshop, in partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/apmphila.org\/\">Asociaci\u00f3n Puertorrique\u00f1os en Marcha (APM)<\/a>,\u00a0developed a walking tour meant to highlight both iconic and historical locations in the neighborhood of Eastern North Philadelphia and engagement activities for a community event to kick-off the walking tour.<\/p>\n<p>The project was titled\u00a0<em>Eastern North Stories\u00a0<\/em>and a walking tour was developed in the neighborhood based on archival research, interviews, and the 2021 and 2020 cohorts&#8217; previous work. The tour begins at Germantown Avenue and Berks Street near the former site of the Anshei Sholom Synagogue and ends at what now stands in its place: Cousin&#8217;s Supermarket. The tour route follows Germantown Avenue, N 8th St, and Diamond St, highlighting properties and buildings of historical significance and present-day importance.\u00a0The team developed Story Cards for each site for participants to read aloud the site&#8217;s history and significance as well as to engage participants in discussion.\u00a0The community engagement event to kick-off the walking tour was held on April 9, 2022 and included activities that focused on gauging residents&#8217; interests and preferences for future developments in the neighborhood as well as sharing their memories and experiences of Eastern North Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the sites highlighted on the Eastern North Stories walk tour visit the page\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lcdssgeo.com\/exhibits\/show\/eastern-north-stories\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eastern North Stories<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Use this link below to view the video of the community event and tour\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/erQL1qts-Lk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Video &#8211; Eastern North Stories<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>2021 Explore Eastern North<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In spring 2021, the Community Development Workshop continued in partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/apmphila.org\/\">Asociaci\u00f3n Puertorrique\u00f1os en Marcha&#8217;s (APM)<\/a> and expanded scope of partnerships to include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lisc.org\/philly\/\">LISC Philadelphia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceibaphiladelphia.org\/\">Cieba<\/a>.\u00a0Building off of previous cohorts, 2021 students worked across seven teams in developing an intersecting set of three walking tours and titled the project\u00a0<em>Explore Eastern North Walking Tours.\u00a0<\/em>Two additional historic walking tours were created for Lehigh Avenue and North 5th Street. Starting at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/apmphila.org\/\">Asociaci\u00f3n Puertorrique\u00f1os en Marcha&#8217;s (APM)<\/a>\u00a06th and Diamond office, the physical walking tour focuses on business and properties directly along Germantown Avenue. This website features profiles for each of the sites on the walking tour, with profiles for additional historical properties located throughout the neighborhood. The information collected here only scratches at the surface of the rich stories found in this neighborhood. Germantown Avenue Walking Tour<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #993300\">2019 Remembering and Envisioning Germantown Avenue<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/SummarySlide.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-287\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/SummarySlide-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/SummarySlide-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/SummarySlide-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/SummarySlide-695x521.jpg 695w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/SummarySlide-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/SummarySlide.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Dr. Mandarano partnered with Asociacion Puertorriquenos en Marcha for the Community Development Workshop capstone course in the Spring of 2019 to create a community engagement program, Germantown Avenue: Remembering and Envisioning.\u00a0 The purpose of the project was to build local identity and capacity by engaging residents in understanding the history of the neighborhood&#8217;s once vibrant commercial corridor.\u00a0 Students conducted archival research and interviews to inform the development of a community event.\u00a0 The event included a series of posters of Iconic Places and storytelling stations to capture information on memories, where residents shop now, and the businesses and services they would like to see on Germantown Avenue.\u00a0 One of the students created a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OEoiNnLXE9A\">documentary video<\/a> of the class project and event.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Research<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>Brownfield Area-wide Planning<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/Focus-Group-2-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-289\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/Focus-Group-2-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/Focus-Group-2-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/Focus-Group-2-4-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/Focus-Group-2-4-695x391.jpg 695w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/Focus-Group-2-4-267x150.jpg 267w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2020\/01\/Focus-Group-2-4.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Dr. Mandarano led the community engagement phases for the <strong>EPA funded Brownfield Area-wide Plan<\/strong> as an investigator on the grant award to Rowan University from 2016-2019.\u00a0 The engagement tasks included public meetings, focus groups, photovoice, and a community design workshop.\u00a0 The research team proposed using focus groups and photovoice as a core engagement method to learn from residents how they experience the built environment.\u00a0 The former industrial district in the New Kensington CDC service area had experienced decades of disinvestment, which resulted in large swaths of abandoned buildings, vacant land, and pockets of illegal dumping, drug dealing, squatting, and the like.\u00a0 The photos the participants labeled dislike told this story and the like photos revealed a compelling story of a neighborhood pride, sense of place, and community.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Students in the graduate Planning Studio in 2016<\/strong><\/em> participated in this research project by facilitating the focus groups, coordinating the photovoice activities and conducting follow-up interviews with the participants.\u00a0 <em><strong>She also trained students in the Spring 2018 Placemaking course<\/strong> <\/em>on how to facilitate group discussions to arrive at conceptual designs for the Community Design Workshop held in 2018.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #800000\">Green Neighborhood Took Kits<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In August 2014, Dr. Mandarano received a<strong> $25,000<\/strong> from the <strong>Wells Fargo Foundation <\/strong>to develop \u201cGreen Neighborhood Tool Kits\u201d and train community-based organizations serving Philadelphia low-income neighborhoods to educate and empower residents to take actions that improve sustainability. She is partnering with the Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corp<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2015\/07\/DSC_0230-e1435850224599.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-218\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2015\/07\/DSC_0230-e1435850224599-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0230\" width=\"328\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2015\/07\/DSC_0230-e1435850224599-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2015\/07\/DSC_0230-e1435850224599-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2015\/07\/DSC_0230-e1435850224599-695x365.jpg 695w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2015\/07\/DSC_0230-e1435850224599-286x150.jpg 286w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/mandarano\/files\/2015\/07\/DSC_0230-e1435850224599-900x473.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><\/a>orations and the New Kensington Community Development Corporation for the project. Students in the Community Development Workshop developed Tool Kits modeled after NKCDC&#8217;s Sustainable 19125 &amp; 19134 initiative for two other community development corporations: Asociacion Puertorriquenos en Marcha and People&#8217;s Emergency Center. The Philadelphia Water Department provided rain barrels; PECO CFL bulbs; and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society provided street trees to support the effort. the geographic focus of the project) identified guiding principles, provided input on potential enhancements through a visual preference survey and prioritized enhancements.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Students in the graduate Planning Studio<\/strong><\/em> documented the outcomes of the charrette workshop and prepared a studio report, <a title=\"Studio Reports\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temple.edu\/ambler\/crp\/research\/studios.htm\">Out of the Water &#8211;
