Cut some Slack?

Overall, Black athletes are more likely to receive an athletic scholarship opposed to black students as a whole receiving academic scholarships. In this weeks article, “Are the Flagship State Universities Exploiting Black Athletes?” I have come to learn that a flourishing Black athlete has nothing to worry about when it comes to applying to the 50 flagship state universities. For those who do not know, flagship state university means the best institution in the state. For instance, at the University of Berkeley and University of Virginia it is said that, “Admissions officials at these two high-rated universities are extremely selective in choosing blacks who they feel will succeed academically. But it appears that the admissions officials at these schools are considerably less selective about the black athletes whom they admit” (Anonymous, 2005). Reading that in admissions, Black athletes are given priority over those who are Black and do not play a sport is insane. This article also states that Black student- athletes are more probable to graduate college than a black student. Realizing that this carries over to college makes me question some college admissions. I say this to say that, in high school the Black athletes who carried the sports team where always cut slack in the classroom because those teachers knew they played a sport and wanted them to continue to be eligible. I can remember this happening first hand in high-school and not just to Black athletes but any color. I think this is a very unfair situation and ongoing problem in the classroom.

I’m interested in know how Temple athletes prioritize their work and what it was like for those who had to go through the entire admissions process. Also, being as though Temple athletes are playing at a D1 level I wanted to know how they’re treated? As far as press conference, being flown across the country to play, etc. This could all have an effect on grades, forcing some to neglect their studies.

As for feedback on my preproduction binder, Tiffany thought my interview questions were really good and will get my interviewees thinking. She also suggested that I keep 6 athletes instead of going down to 4 because it will give my video a sense of variety in which I agreed. My next steps are to find my 6 athletes as well as to get my last signature for my committee members tomorrow.

For proof of concept, I think I want to create a short video on how I envision my documentary to look like regarding all parts of it. Hopefully in this concept video I can include some parts of what Imagine my opening to sound and look like without running into copyright issues.
