As the weeks go on and I really sit and think how I can bring this topic to life, I’m constantly trying to for new documentaries to watch to help me get a sense of what I want my project to look like. Over the next couple of days I plan to spend more time dedicated to the MA project. The time management assignment that was done in class last week made me realize that I need to commit more time to both portions of the project.
As I sat and found sources for my research last week, I was able to really narrow down on different subtopics that I wanted to talk about. In The (Black) Struggle That Must Be: Black Masculinity, Black College Athletes, and Black Mental Health Through a Looking Glass by Lamont A. Williams, he uses the looking glass theory by Charles Horton Cooley to examine what it means to be a masculine Black male who was a former athlete with have mental health issues. Through this article I get a first hand account on what this feels like to be black and have mental health issues and see how it is handled. All in all, this helped me want to further my research on “the looking glass self” as it pertains to African Americans. I think I can thoroughly use this theory through my research and production.
