Clark et al. examine what it means to be in a Black body and play sports. The article does a great job noting the pros but also the cons of having a Black body such as health disparities. They(the authors) point out different high risk health problems among Blacks such as obesity and heart disease. It also puts emphasis on how Black athletes bodies are considered superior and healthy but you cannot say that about the Black population as a whole. For its evidence, the article refers back to direct moments in sports history comparing some athletes bodies to then and now. I think this article really does a major job at tackling some common misconceptions amongst black athletes and the black community.
This article gave me an idea on topics I could write about in my final paper. When thinking about the paper I often get overwhelmed because I know it has to be a minimum amount of pages and I worry that I will run out of talking points. This article had many points that I do not think I would have thought of if I did not read it. When interviewing my Black Temple athletes I want to be sure to include picture of them in their uniforms so viewers can get a look a their body type and how they may come off as the “superior athlete”. This will be a talking for me as well, “looks can be deceiving”.
This week regarding to my project I started to jot down notes on how I want my documentary to visually come across to viewers and what that will look like. I’m excited about this because I want the documentary to come off as aesthetically pleasing.
