\"\"<\/a>This year, the Libraries\u2019 <\/span>Beyond the Page <\/span><\/i>public programming series<\/span><\/a> is curated around programs exploring access and opportunity. We will consider <\/span>barriers\u2014whether cultural, financial, physical, or otherwise\u2014that limit opportunities and how we can move toward a more accessible world.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve rounded up a list of reading suggestions to introduce you to our speakers and some of the topics they\u2019ll cover. Check out our recommendations and we hope to see you this fall!<\/span><\/p>\n

All these programs will be held in the <\/span>Paley Library<\/span><\/a> Lecture Hall. As always, our programs are free and open to all. <\/span><\/p>\n

Investing in Accessibility <\/b><\/p>\n

Read about why the U.S. needs more <\/span>accessible playgrounds<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>this augmented reality project <\/span><\/a>for which Temple\u2019s Institute on Disabilities received funding from the Knight Foundations\u2019 art and technology Prototype Fund to make live theater more accessible for hearing impaired and non-English speakers. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sara Goldrick-Rab on Access and Opportunity in Higher Education<\/b><\/p>\n

Temple Professor and nationally-recognized scholar Sara Goldrick-Rab will <\/span>speak at the Libraries<\/span><\/a> on Tuesday, September 11 at 6:00 PM. Check out her <\/span>interview with Trevor Noah<\/span><\/a> and her <\/span>New York Times <\/span><\/i>op-ed<\/span><\/a> on college students and food insecurity. This recent <\/span>Philadelphia Inquirer <\/span><\/i>story highlights both <\/span>Sara\u2019s work and Cherry\u00a0<\/span><\/a>Pantry<\/span><\/a>, Temple\u2019s campus food pantry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conrad Benner of <\/span>StreetsDept.com<\/span><\/a> and Cindy M. Ngo of <\/span>Eat Up The Borders<\/span><\/i><\/a> are leading a series of <\/span>artist talks <\/span><\/a>(Thursday, September 20), <\/span>artist panels<\/span><\/a> (Monday, September 24), and a <\/span>wheatpaste workshop<\/span><\/a> (Wednesday, October 3) as part of the Philly Public Arts Forum at the Libraries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michelle Angela Ortiz <\/span>honors the immigrant experience<\/span><\/a> and uses her <\/span>art as activism<\/span>, while <\/span><\/a>Marisa Vel\u00e1zquez-Rivas tells <\/span>her own story<\/span><\/a> as an artist shining a lights on immigrants, queer communities, and feminism. Other artists include <\/span>Carol Zou<\/span><\/a>, part of the <\/span>Michelada Think Tank <\/span><\/a>team,<\/span> Russell Craig, recipient of a <\/span>Right of Return fellowship for formerly incarcerated artists<\/span><\/a> to address prison reform, and Keir Johnston, a member of <\/span>Amber Art and Design<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>an art collective making public art to enact change. Johnston has also worked on the <\/span>Mural Arts Philadelphia project honoring late civil rights leader Octavius V. Catto<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Libraries\u2019 symposium series about our new Charles Library continues and will focus this semester on the new library\u2019s potential to transform Temple University\u2019s main campus.
