Nickels will discuss his book <em>Philadelphia Architecture <\/em>(Arcadia, 2005), which celebrates the richness and diversity of our city\u2019s built environment.      Nickels has a long history of architectural journalism, and in 2005 won the American Institute of Architects\u2019 Lewis Mumford Award for Architectural Journalism.  He is the <em>The Bulletin\u2019s <\/em>architecture critic, and writes a weekly column on the subject for <em>Philadelphia Metro<\/em>.  His knowledge of architecture goes back even further; he was raised in a family of architects and remembers leafing through his father\u2019s trade magazines at a young age.  Nickels knew he would one day write on this topic; a meeting with famed Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius solidified this notion.  An accomplished writer, Nickels is also a poet, journalist and author of 7 books beyond <em>Philadelphia Architecture<\/em>: <em>The Cliffs of Aries <\/em>(Aegina Press, 1988), <em>Two Novellas: Walking Water &amp; After All This<\/em> (Banned Books, 1989), <em>The Boy on the Bicycle <\/em>(Starbooks Press, 2003), <em>Images of America: Manayunk <\/em>(Arcadia Publishing, 2001), <em>Images of America: Gay and Lesbian Philadelphia <\/em>(Arcadia Publishing, 2001) <em>Tropic of Libra <\/em>(Starbooks Press, 2002) and <em>Out in History <\/em>(Starbooks Press, 2005).  He is a Contributing Editor for <em>Philadelphia\u2019s Weekly Press <\/em>and writes a social commentary column for STAR Publications.  Nickels writes extensively on travel and the arts, and co-founded the Arts Defense League.  He is also a regular contributor to the <em>Gay and Lesbian Review <\/em>and <em>Lambda Book Report<\/em>.  His column, \u201cDifferent Strokes,\u201d was the first weekly out gay newspaper column in the nation.
