This installation was led by Green Grant recipients, Engineers for Climate Action. <a href=\"https:\/\/nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fsustainability.temple.edu%2Fconnect%2Fstudents%2Fgreen-grant&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cella.lathan%40temple.edu%7Ccfba9a95ee384127130908dd836eb72f%7C716e81efb52244738e3110bd02ccf6e5%7C0%7C0%7C638811233716047019%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=VhiOGK9Du6gQk3IFJkEL117nle5yiakS46bzNIxn7nE%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Green Grant<\/a> funds student-led projects, programs, and initiatives that advance Temple University&#8217;s commitment to sustainability through their positive impact on campus and our local environment and community. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineers for Climate Action were awarded $900 from the Office of Sustainability\u2019s Green Grant for parts associated with the construction of the hydroponics display. Their sustainable hydroponics system, an innovative solution for growing plants using mineral-rich water instead of soil, now lives in Charles Library.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its installation in late April, it has become a luscious garden! Ranging in plant variety from tomatoes to kale, few libraries are lucky enough to have tomatoes growing inside the actual building!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-ad2f72ca wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-rounded\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/librarynews\/files\/2025\/07\/DSC02547-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16392\" style=\"width:449px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Hydroponic Display on June 3, 2025.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-rounded\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/librarynews\/files\/2025\/07\/DSC02533-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/librarynews\/files\/2025\/07\/DSC02533-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16393\" style=\"width:484px;height:auto\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Hydroponic <strong>Display<\/strong> on July 15, 2025<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot only do our crops use ~90% less water than traditional methods, but the living installation serves as a reminder to all students on campus that there is a culture of sustainability here are Temple,\u201d Maddy Mailloux said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hydroponic systems have many benefits including enhancing plant yields, using less water, being able to grow all year round, and preventing soil degradation. The hydroponics system is not just a tool for growing plants\u2014it is a platform for cultivating awareness, fostering collaboration, and driving progress toward a more sustainable future.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All made possible by the Green Grant recipients, these students have worked hard to achieve this triumph but they couldn&#8217;t have done it without one another.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA little extra effort goes a long way when it comes to sustainability&#8230; working in collaboration towards a common goal can do a lot of good on our campus,\u201d Erich Sands said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climate Action PA, League of Conservation Voters, put together a video with the students involved in the hydroponic installation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DJonR9hMiiM\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here to watch the installation come to life.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/librarynews\/files\/2025\/07\/DSC02542-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/librarynews\/files\/2025\/07\/DSC02542-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16394\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hydroponic Display on July 22, 2025.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Want to learn more about how the hydroponic system works?
