Examples include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>JAWS (Job Access with Speech): a screen reading software installed on all public desktops and loaner laptops<\/li><li>Ubi Duos 2: a face-to-face communication assistive device with two separate keyboards and screens that convey messages between two people in real time letter for letter (helpful for non-verbal or hearing impaired)<\/li><li>Optelec ClearView Speech Reader: a sight amplifying device that increases size and contrast of text and can read aloud to you<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BookBot<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The groundbreaking technology used in our <a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/spaces\/charles-in-charge\">Automatic Storage and Retrieval System<\/a> in Charles Library has freed up space for dozens of study rooms (many of which have monitors and presentation technology), other types of collaborative space, and specialized research equipment (see Duckworth Scholars Studio below). When a book or bound journal is requested via our online catalog, the BookBot initiates the request and the material is delivered to a processing station to be readied for patron pick up. Check out our <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/tulibraries\">Instagram<\/a> story takeover on Tuesday, April 5 for a behind-the-scenes look at the BookBot and the staff that make it work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Battery banks and laptops<\/strong> <\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-thumbnail is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/librarynews\/files\/2022\/03\/20210729_CharlesLibrary-7-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/librarynews\/files\/2022\/03\/20210729_CharlesLibrary-7-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph of portable battery bank in Charles Library\" class=\"wp-image-15673\" width=\"140\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Photo by Geneva Heffernan<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In Charles Library, portable battery banks and laptops are available for Temple affiliates to check out. The banks operate as portable outlets, allowing you to charge your devices anywhere in the library. The <a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/services\/borrow-a-laptop\">laptops<\/a> can be checked out for a few hours and can even be taken outside the building and returned to any kiosk on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Innovation Space and Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/spaces\/ginsburg-innovation-space\">The Innovation Space<\/a> in Ginsburg Library and <a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/lcdss\">Duckworth Scholars Studio<\/a> in Charles Library are hubs of creativity and technology that offer equipment such as VR headsets, 3D printers, laser cutters, sticker\/button makers, and digital software for any Temple affiliates to use. And, as long as you are utilizing the WiFi in our building, you have access to all our databases, journals, articles, and ebooks! There are also charging lockers available to secure and charge phones while in Charles Library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ambler Library in the Technology Center<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/libraries\/ambler\">Ambler Campus Library<\/a> is open in a scaled-down capacity in the Ambler Technology Center (inside the Ambler Campus Learning Center). With computers readily available, you can receive in-person reference help while immersed in online work. Stop by to check out the new spot and say hello!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital collections from the Special Collections Research Center<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the reading room on the first floor of Charles Library and the amazing materials you can view and touch, the <a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/scrc\">Special Collections Research Center<\/a> has an enormous <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.library.temple.edu\/\">online repository<\/a> of digital collections including scans of documents, photographs, video, and audio content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Black Lives Always Mattered! Blockson Afro-American Collection<\/a> launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/webpages\/blam\">online exhibit<\/a> showcasing the stories and art that went into the <em>BLAM!<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/news.temple.edu\/news\/2022-01-11\/black-lives-always-mattered-invites-all-see-philadelphia-history-living-color\">graphic novel<\/a>, produced with the Pew Center for Arts &amp; Heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ebooks and open publishing<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Our in-house publisher, Temple University Press, offers <a href=\"https:\/\/tupress.temple.edu\/\">ebooks for sale<\/a> for most of their publications. In addition, North Broad Press, the open publishing arm of Temple University Press and Temple University Libraries, produces open textbooks, <a href=\"https:\/\/tupress.temple.edu\/open-access\/north-broad-press\">freely available online<\/a> for anyone to access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out this\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/templepress.wordpress.com\/2022\/03\/30\/celebrating-national-library-week\/\" target=\"_blank\">North Philly Notes blog post<\/a>\u00a0highlighting the Press\u2019 open access books, journals, and collaborations\u00a0in celebration of National Library Week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Equipment for use<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/services\/borrow-media-equipment\">Technical equipment<\/a> available for check out from Charles Library includes portable DVD players, calculators, cameras, and a Raspberry Pi. Ginsburg Library offers noise canceling headphones, calculators, laptop stands, power strips, and chargers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>There are dozens of ways to connect with the Libraries and our technology.
