Description: In 1913 Sophia and Dimitry Makedonsky were teenagers when they left the Ukraine for the United States. Growing up in the Midwest, filmmaker LeAnn Erickson often heard stories of \u2018the old country\u2019 her grandparents had left behind.\u00a0As Erickson travels to Russia, the search for a sense of \u2018place\u2019 sparks a re-examination of her family\u2019s immigrant past. Her own return to America sets in motion an interior journey that leads her to discover a new vision of an \u2018old country\u2019.<\/p>\n

Through immigrant memories, real and imagined, Folk Songs<\/em> explores issues of personal identity and their connection to land, language and belonging.<\/p>\n

Description:\u00a0Caroline was a childhood friend of my mother\u2019s. I knew nothing of her, save\u00a0for the single photograph of her included in a family album. This film\u00a0incorporates a performance of the reconstruction of the photo using sand and paint\u00a0along with interpretive footage based on the spoken text, a description of the\u00a0photograph. The film documents a process as it investigates the nature of\u00a0photographs to transcend time, place, and memory.<\/p>\n

\nDescription:\u00a0On Russian Easter in 1971 my grandmother recorded an audio tape \u2018letter\u2019\u00a0which she mailed to her absent children. The tape, long forgotten, resurfaced in\u00a01986 and excerpts were used to create Hello from Grandma<\/em>.
