So many. Every web search, article, video, book reveals more places to take in, more cool stuff to do. So, I started a list.

Even though I will be in Kyoto for a full semester, I am not there on holiday. I’ll be teaching my usual course load, so I’ll have prep and grading to do outside the classroom.

I’m hoping my spreadsheet will help me not miss things I want to see. Not so much to check things off a list (I’ve never been that sort of traveler), but rather how to make the most of my time and take in as much as I can while fulfilling my work obligations. I’ve started the list partly as a reminder to myself to not lose sight of the incredible opportunity I’ve been so fortunate to receive.

The epic Fushimi Inari Shrine is definitely on the list. But so are things like a walk along Horikawa canal, a Sanga F.C. football match, Katsuragawa wild bird park, climbing Mr. Hiei, and even visiting the Natural Whetstone Museum (yes, I’m serious about that last one).

There is such a wealth to explore and learn. The beauty and history of Kyoto, its cultural and historic riches. Those who know me know I can lapse into work mode and lose track of time. Partly, that’s because I find teaching so rewarding. I truly enjoy everything I do.

When I lived and studied in Paris, I rarely did school work in my room. Rather, I gravitated to parks and cafes to read and do my assignments. Le Jardin de Luxembourg was a favorite.

I’ll have to arrive at a balance. I have no idea what that will look like, but I’m determined to figure it out.

There are so many things I want to see and do while in Kyoto.
