The last time I left the country for a year, I had a horribly heavy hard-sided suitcase; a smaller, flimsy soft-sided suitcase; and a small backpack. I can’t even remember what I packed. I do remember having a used winter coat shipped to me and having to pay about $20 (around $60 today) in duties to get it from the post office.

But I was a student. I didn’t need any fancy clothes, though I did give into my parents and brought a suit. I made up an excuse to wear it once.

I’ll need some guidance on how I should dress for classes. I’m assuming (and hoping!) a university polo or a sportcoat and button-down shirt combination will be acceptable.

Shopping for clothing is challenging for me in the states. I have long arms. And pants? Forget about it. So shopping where my language skills will be limited will definitely be a greater challenge.

But I have a solution. I think.

Uniqlo is a Japanese clothing store with outlets in Kyoto. They also have a shop not far from me. So, I figure I can go and try on their clothes, get some item numbers for things I might need. Then, armed with the phrase これください (this one, please), I should be able to manage a retail encounter.

How do you pack for a 15-week trip?
