

{"id":352,"date":"2020-08-06T20:49:36","date_gmt":"2020-08-07T00:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/klugman\/?p=352"},"modified":"2020-08-06T20:49:36","modified_gmt":"2020-08-07T00:49:36","slug":"covid-testing-data-addendum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/klugman\/2020\/08\/06\/covid-testing-data-addendum\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID testing data addendum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my last <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/klugman\/2020\/08\/05\/covid-testing-data\/\">post<\/a>, I expressed some dissatisfaction with attempted take-downs of Donald Trump&#8217;s assertion that increased COVID cases are just an artifact of testing.\u00a0 While looking over the COVID Tracking Project I found this nice visualization:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/covidtracking.com\/data\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-351 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/klugman\/files\/2020\/08\/covid-tracker.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1177\" height=\"482\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/klugman\/files\/2020\/08\/covid-tracker.png 1177w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/klugman\/files\/2020\/08\/covid-tracker-300x123.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/klugman\/files\/2020\/08\/covid-tracker-1024x419.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/klugman\/files\/2020\/08\/covid-tracker-768x315.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1177px) 100vw, 1177px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think this does a better job of putting to rest Trump&#8217;s excuse for a greater COVID cases.\u00a0 For one thing, the number of new cases does not track with the number of tests being done.\u00a0 From May through June cases declined while testing grew.\u00a0 For a second thing, the smoothing of the death trend makes the increase starting in July a bit clearer (although still obviously the number of new deaths is fortunately quite lower than it was in April).\u00a0 For a third thing, the hospitalization data is very clear that we have seen a true increase in COVID cases that is hard to wish away as data artifacts (I mean, I suppose one could argue that COVID cases have been constant and the dip in June was because people were staying from the hospital, but that stretches credulity).
