She sits at her vanity in her bedroom applying traditional kohl eyeliner. There is a window behind her depicting her city with blue skies and no destruction, and the only thing she has to worry about in that moment is the task at hand. My concept that freedom is found in the ability to worry about what makes life enriching, not simply survival. Freedom is found in the ability to participate in the tasks of everyday, something as simple as a woman getting herself ready for the day, and not fearing for your safety or wellbeing because of war, animosity, government repression, etc. The edges of the canvas are painted with the colors of the Palestinian flag.

2nd place: “Lady Justice”*
Layla Fadheil-Cruz
Criminal Justice Major / CLA

Description: This piece attempts to display the complexity and disparity when it comes to the justice system.
