Final Post – Thank YOU – Week #13

Over the past semester, I want to thank all of you in the cohort for helping me formulate critical thoughts that have helped me narrow down my research focus throughout this process.

When I met with my chair, Dr. Kristine Wheatherston, we discussed what my project is about and how I plan on executing it. We also talked about gathering release forms from my interviewees. These forms will ensure my usage of their image and home video footage without running into any future legal issues. Kristine also walked me through how to legally use archival footage for b-roll and is sending me a few information forms about permission rights.

After my talk with Kristine, I believe my next deliverable will be sending out my timeline and proof of concept to all my committee members. Hopefully, by the start of next semester, I’ll be able to show my committee a good amount of the footage I’ll have gathered over the winter break.

Currently, my committee consists of: Dr. Kristine Wheatherston (MSP), Prof. Laura Zaylea (MSP), Dr. Yun Zhu (CLA: Chinese Lit & Women’s studies), and Prof. Saleem Ahmed (Multimedia Journalism)

During my one-on-two meeting with Dr. Shaw and Prof. Zaylea, I shared my concerns about having too many interviewees. Dr. Shaw suggested if I end up with too many individual interviews, I could use what I need for the master’s project and later return to the extra footage turning this short into a feature-length documentary. This will be something I plan on considering doing for the future and potentially trying to expand my interview subjects to my entire adoption group and not just a few of them.

After reflection, I am incredibly proud of how far I have let this idea take me and all that I’ve accomplished over the past three semesters. Through this documentary short, I want the future representation of minorities in the media to be more present and my fellow adopted Chinese Asian Americans to be seen and felt seen throughout the media they consume.
