Research Reflection – Week 2

After reflecting on some of the knowledge and skill sets I’ll need to complete and accomplish this culminating project, I thought of my limited experience in producing and directing a film project, especially something of this caliber. I’m currently taking the course Producing and Directing this semester to help strengthen some of the skills that I’m lacking in some areas. Skills such as working with camera and audio, setting up shots, video editing, creating a shot list and more.

In terms of research skills, although I have personal background knowledge on my topic I realize that doesn’t mean I know everything about Asian representation in the media and past media. I want to start researching and learning everything I can about how past and present media represents Chinese and Asian characters and culture. I think perhaps taking a cultural lens theory approach towards this project will also help me obtain the type of research I’m looking for.

Having a background in journalism, I’m familiar with asking and creating questions for the potential participant’s in this documentary. As well as writing scripts for past journalism projects. However, I am unfamiliar with writing scripts for short films or documentaries. But I plan on using some of my knowledge of what I already know and trying my best to transfer that over to my project’s script. Hopefully LinkedIn Learning can help.

Below are some questions I plan on asking some potential committee members:

  1. How often would you be able to meet with me? How often do you respond to people?
  2. Would my project topic appealing/exciting to you? Something you’d like to work with me on?
  3. What type of past research have you done that would help guide me throughout this project? Have you worked on a personal project or a past student’s final project that is similar to what I am trying to create? Like a documentary? (given I’ve already done all the online research I could about the potential committee member)
