Overview

My research addresses questions of plant, soil, and ecosystem responses to intensive human modification of the environment. Most often, I investigate ways in which rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N) enrichment, and urbanization alter plant structure and function, and thereby influence ecosystem-scale phenomena like plant productivity and spread, soil water storage, and stormwater movement. A large part of this research focuses on plant-soil interactions, and the relationship between above and belowground processes. I use a combination of field studies, experimentation, and computational modeling to gain robust insight into questions of plant-environment interactions.
