Welcome to the 2024 Institute for New Educational Developers presented by POD and The Temple University Center for the Advancement of Teaching:

A TAXONOMY OF EVIDENCE-BASED AND EQUITABLE EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS

Monday, July 29 – Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 11:am-5:00pm EDT

Hosted fully online

On behalf of POD and Temple University, the staff at the Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) is delighted to welcome you to the 2024 Online Institute for New Educational Developers (INED). During this 4-day virtual conference, you will have the opportunity to meet and develop collegial relationships with leaders in the field of educational development as well as with your fellow new educational developers.

Before the conference, starting July 1, 2024, we will make asynchronous materials (such as readings, videos, and podcasts) available on the conference platform. These materials will provide information and resources on foundational principles of evidence-based teaching and the history of the field, allowing those who desire some preparation before attending the conference to avail themselves of these resources. Asynchronous materials will remain available during and after the Institute.

During the conference, there will be synchronous sessions, including a keynote and anchor session, as well as concurrent sessions, one-on-one coaching, networking and drop-in Q&A opportunities.

We hope the 2024 Online INED ignites your passion for continual learning and reflection on how you can best assist your faculty and TAs and gives you greater self-confidence in your knowledge base and skills set.

We have leveraged the six domains of L. Dee Fink’s Taxonomy of Significant Learning Goals and then enhanced his model by holistically integrating principles of equitable and inclusive teaching.

Learning Objectives

By participating in INED you will:

  1. Describe how educational development has evolved as a profession with a body of research and well-defined best practices in response to changes, new evidence, and trends in higher education.
  2. Apply the theories and science of learning to educate people from diverse communities and cultures in all college and university contexts, including students in undergraduate and graduate programs as well as faculty, staff, and others participating in professional learning.
  3. Act as an inclusive and equity-minded educational developer in the design and delivery of programs.
  4. Effectively practice educational development skills and competencies to meet the needs of their home institution including, but not limited to:
    • Coaching and consulting
    • Designing and facilitating workshops and long-format programming
    • Program promotion utilizing the web, email, social media, and print
    • Needs assessment and program prioritization based on available resources
    • Assessment of programming for effectiveness, equity, and improvement
    • Fostering critically reflective teaching practice
    • Integrating academic technology into learning activities
  5. Consider the importance of cross-institutional collaboration and relationship-building in order to support advocacy efforts towards positive change.
  6. Develop strategies for managing the emotional labor of educational development, both to be more effective in your work, and to nurture resiliency and wellness for yourself.
