The Calm Before the Storm
Unexpected rain darkens the courtyard
Gilgamesh Retold (ch 10)
This is a picture that I took of the sunrise in the parking lot on my last day of high school. While this picture was not taken after the pandemic had completely set in, I look back at this image a lot. When I took this picture, I did not know that it would have been my last day of high school. School was cancelled that night for a “deep cleaning” and we were expected to be back in a week. I see this picture as the calm before the storm. Everything was still normal, and we had no idea what the rest of the year would have in store for us. My friends and I were looking forward to prom, graduation, and senior week, not knowing that these would all be cancelled in the coming months. I used the quotation “unexpected rain darkens the courtyard” because that’s what the pandemic is to us. It’s an unexpected rain that has put a halt to our lives for almost an entire year. I think this picture is interesting because of the juxtaposition of the beauty of the sunrise vs the ugliness of what was just around the corner.
