Frozen Times, Empty Times

their heart grew cold

they let their wings down

If Not, Winter – Fragments of Sappho (Carson 42)

In this image, a few things can be seen: a woman crossing the street, a square still covered in snow, its trees still leafless, a man seating by himself on one of the few tables scatered there. In the context of the pandemic, we can say that loneliness, emptiness, and loominess can be seen. Of course that streets tend to be emptier and not many people are seen outside during winter, but this one is different: empty streets are now the norm and the cold weather has made it difficult to enjoy some of the only things we can done safely during these times. Talking about time, I have made this word central to my title here and hopefully to my images too because I believe that, for a lot of people, even though our lives keep somehow going forward, time feels frozen and empty. A lot of our freedoms have been limited (our wings are down) and we are living in a constant state of uneasyness, tragedies either happening or hiding aroud the corner (and so our hearts grew cold). Of course these problems exist primarily because of the pandemic but various societal expectations contribute to these feelings that time is not passing unless we are being "productive" and going to "x" places and seeing "y" people. What we can do to overcome these issues is to do our best to contain the virus and eventually end the pandemic as well as explore new ways to live the "good life" and promote the normalization of breaking societal expectations.
