Moving On Up: Transitioning from Colleague to Supervisor
*Formerly known as, “PEER Today, BOSS Tomorrow”
This session will prepare newly promoted supervisors with the tools to navigate the shift from peer to boss. If you are a newly promoted supervisor that has the responsibility of supervising previous coworkers or peers this course is for you. We’ll explore how your role is changing and new situations you’ll encounter. Participants in this session will learn how to overcome the challenges like setting boundaries, communicating effectively, building trust and respect, and providing feedback to peers and coworkers.
Stay Interviews
The stay interview is a valuable resource for learning what keeps employees with your organization and what might cause them to leave. They are most effective when conducted outside of the performance review process. The primary focus of the conversation is to develop an understanding of your employees’ professional aspirations, motivators and demotivators, and experience working for the company and unit. This conversation should not focus on work-related performance issues or projects. When done correctly, stay interviews can aid employers in retaining top talent and developing a culture that is outwardly committed to the success of its workforce. Stay interviewers can also support employee engagement and feelings of support and connection to the business unit and organization.
Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know
Have you ever heard yourself saying, “that won’t work here!” or asked so many questions about a colleague’s suggestion they felt like they were being interrogated, or had an idea that you thought was the only way to approach a difficult problem? According to Adam Grant’s book, Think Again, you were assuming a role that may have contributed to your inability to consider relevant or important information. Think Again invites us to consider the role of the “scientist” who asks questions, gathers information, and adjusts the decision making accordingly. In this two-hour session, the major principles and concepts in Grant’s book will be presented and reviewed.

Attendance 101
Managing attendance can be challenging. Knowing the answers to these basic questions can be a tremendous help: How should your employees call in an absence? When can you (or should you!) ask for medical certification? Are you required to approve vacation or personal holidays? How are employees designated as essential personnel and what impact does that have when there is a campus closure? When should discipline be imposed for attendance matters? Does FMLA change the rules for any of this? We will dispel the myths in this training session and give you the information necessary to effectively manage attendance.
Performance Management 101
Maximizing an employee’s performance does not start with them, it begins with you. There is a tangible way to determine if you are providing your employees with everything they need in order to meet job performance standards and expectations. Let’s explore it! We will also discuss the frustration of feeling like you spend all of your time on one or two employees.
Unions 101
What is a Union? Why are they at Temple? How should I interact with them? Are there any special rules I should be aware? Who are my resources? Come review all of these areas and more so you will have a solid foundation while working in a unionized environment.
Progressive Discipline 101
Sometimes employees are not meeting job expectations and discipline may be the appropriate next step. Who do I consult regarding the situation? What level of discipline is appropriate? How do I document a discipline? When do they have a right to union representation? In this session we’ll provide all these answers and more.
FMLA Training
Many supervisors are unfamiliar with the provisions of the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and are unaware of what events should trigger a telephone call, or an email, to Human Resources. This session aims to educate supervisors on how to properly comply with FMLA regulations.
