Our Current Moment

Posted byZachary Holzberg April 5, 2021 Leave a comment on Our Current Moment

My project is about gentrification and its effects around Temple University, so the present-day concerns are a culmination of how the North Philadelphia community has been impacted. People now are more concerned with how gentrification is pushing communities out, while in the past, gentrification has been framed as a process that improves communities.

The main theme in my project that is relevant today is the effects of change. Change is when one thing becomes another, and it’s all a matter of perspective on how we feel about any change. The process of change that comes along with gentrification is a complex issue that’s very nuanced, and I want to highlight just how complex the issue of gentrification is, and how all opinions on it have some sort of merit.

THROWBACK SONG OF THE WEEK

This week’s song is “Fancy Clown” by Madvillian. I just really miss MF DOOM.

My audience

I imagine my audience as people who are affected by, interested in, or are a part of gentrification around Temple (or any urban university). I hope that people can see a more full picture of the effects of gentrification, and how it affects the surrounding area and people of the community.

I would hope my audience connects my project to the way they interact and think about the communities around them. Is this area getting “better,” or is the community getting pushed out? Or, even better, people will think of things in a less black and white way and see a more full picture, rather than just a half glass empty or full type of situation. On a larger level, I’d hope it’d show people that history is a nuanced thing, and you have the power to interpret history and find your opinion on the implications of historical events.

That’s all for today, so thanks for reading my blog post, I hope you enjoyed it!
