This course is a capstone class for the Community Development major and the work displayed in this exhibit is the culmination of three years of work with the community partner, <a href=\"https:\/\/apmphila.org\/\">Asociacion Puertorriquenos en Marcha<\/a> (APM). <br \/><br \/>After an initial orientation, where the entire class received an introduction to the SCRC and learned about finding and using archival materials, a smaller group of students, tasked with historical research of sites in the neighborhood, made several return visits to the SCRC reading room.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Baker-Bowl-Final-resized-675x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5275\" style=\"width:213px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Baker-Bowl-Final-resized-675x1024.jpg 675w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Baker-Bowl-Final-resized-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Baker-Bowl-Final-resized-768x1166.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Baker-Bowl-Final-resized-1012x1536.jpg 1012w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Baker-Bowl-Final-resized-1349x2048.jpg 1349w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Baker-Bowl-Final-resized.jpg 1662w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Eventually, the students focused their efforts on sites in three areas: Lehigh Avenue, North 5th Street, and Germantown Avenue. SCRC collections used were <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.library.temple.edu\/digital\/collection\/p15037coll3\">photographs from the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin<\/a> and items from our <a href=\"https:\/\/library.temple.edu\/finding_aids\/491\">Urban Archives pamphlet collection<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These teams also conducted research at <a href=\"https:\/\/tallerpr.org\/\">Taller Puertorrique\u00f1o<\/a>, a community organization based in North Philadelphia that uses art and cultural programming to promote development within its community and the Puerto Rican and Latino Diaspora. In addition to archival research, students conducted neighborhood walkthroughs and interviewed community members to identify sites of historic significance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Lehigh-Avenue-Walking-Tour-Final-Map-resized-1024x488.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5277\" style=\"width:342px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Lehigh-Avenue-Walking-Tour-Final-Map-resized-1024x488.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Lehigh-Avenue-Walking-Tour-Final-Map-resized-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Lehigh-Avenue-Walking-Tour-Final-Map-resized-768x366.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Lehigh-Avenue-Walking-Tour-Final-Map-resized-1536x733.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/Lehigh-Avenue-Walking-Tour-Final-Map-resized-2048x977.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Another group of students tasked, with creating posters and graphics, received training and technical assistance from the Library\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/tudsc\/\">Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio<\/a> to produce the eye-catching graphics and posters utilizing some of the materials located by the archival research teams. &nbsp;A selection of those items from the SCRC are also on display, next to the posters that they inspired.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/p15037coll3_83726_medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5278\" style=\"width:351px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/p15037coll3_83726_medium.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2025\/10\/p15037coll3_83726_medium-300x235.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Posters created by the students and a selection of photographs, pamphlets, and other related materials from the SCRC will be on display on the first floor of Charles Library in the main lobby throughout late January 2022. &nbsp; Exhibit production was funded through generous support from The Albert M.
