S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long before August 18, 1920, when the woman suffrage movement brought about the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, women were making themselves heard in a variety of ways that broadly transformed the American experience. The Greater Philadelphia region has a strong tradition of women\u2019s initiatives to expand their rights and opportunities through political participation, education, work, property-holding, and cultural activities. The region\u2019s archives reflect Philadelphia\u2019s Quaker origins and the Quaker traditions of women\u2019s equality and outspokenness; the city\u2019s role as a center for African-American politics and culture; and the development of institutions such as the world\u2019s first medical college for women, among many other topics.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2026\/01\/Suffragettes-1917-1920.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5710\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.271809382938358;width:381px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Taken together, these collections demonstrate that the campaign for woman suffrage did not happen in a vacuum, but was the result of decades of women of all kinds moving out of the home and into the schools and workplaces of the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"lead\"><em>In Her Own Right: Women Asserting Their Civil Rights, 1820-1920,<\/em> showcases Philadelphia-area collections highlighting women\u2019s struggle leading to the passage of the 19th Amendment.&nbsp;&nbsp;In Her Own Right is multi-phase project organized by members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/pacscl.org\/\">Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL)<\/a>, with generous funding from the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Council on LIbrary and Information Resources, the New Century Trust, and the Delmas Foundation.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2026\/01\/Mildred-Lillian-Ennis-c-1916.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.temple.edu\/historynews\/files\/2026\/01\/Mildred-Lillian-Ennis-c-1916.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5708\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.9972926409057348;width:422px;height:auto\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inherownright.org\/catalog?utf8=%E2%9C%93&amp;search_field=all_fields&amp;q=Student+Photo%2C+Mildred+Lillian+Ennis\">Mildred Lillian Ennis , Class of 1919, Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital and Training School<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Participating organizations are digitizing and describing content which is uploaded regularly to the database.&nbsp; Visit http:\/\/www.inherownright.org\/ to start exploring that content&#8211;which will grow to at least 150,000 frames before the project concludes in Spring 2021.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;In Her Own Right project team<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the&nbsp; U.
